Talk about opposite viewpoints! In this particular search, the first thing I noticed was the savetheelephants.org website was listed first on the Google search, but last on the Bing search. I primarily use Google for all of my searches, both personal and work use. However, I found that in the Bing search, a Pinterest link was in the results. It is interesting that this shows up in the Bing search, mostly because I log into my Pinterest with a Gmail account. Overall, I see that most items in the Google search were direct links to websites that “take action” and articles about those who take this action. Yet, the Bing search showed many websites for images of animal activists, some not even elephant activists, and at least one of the articles listed in the Google search. After my observation, I believe my “filter bubbles” on Google allow me to get straight to the point of taking action, whereas Bing finds my creative side and wants to show me pictures first.

When searching for portrait photographers, I assumed I would get many sites discussing famous portrait photographers. In the Google search, that is primarily what resulted. However, the Bing search completely through me for a loop. The first website that popped up was an advertisement for JCPenney Portraits with deals on their portrait photography. I had to laugh at this because I myself have fallen victim to some JCP portraits back in the day. This search also pointed out my location as I got a few sites for suggested portrait photographers in my area, i.e. Google search #3 and #10. I must have my location services turned on, because I was not signed into any of my Google accounts while doing this search. Bing was even able to find my location, as I was given two portrait photographer websites close to my residence, i.e. Bing search #6 and #7. However, while I was not very specific with this search, I was glad to have received some “helpful tips” sites on the Bing search. I was not happy to see that Google provided, within the first 10 results, sites pertaining to portrait photographers that I should follow or should inspire me. I suppose being more specific in my Google search would warrant the results I was looking for.

As a video editor by trade, these results were particularly intriguing. The Google search “hit the nail on the head” with the results I was expecting. I have used several of the websites revealed in the search, such as Pond5, Premium Beat and Adobe. I would trust these sites if I were looking up basic video editing techniques. The two YouTube videos that were thrown into the mix are from verified accounts on YouTube and teach the basic video editing skills and techniques that would be helpful for new editors, i.e. Google search #2 and #10. I typically recommend watching YouTube videos to anyone wanting to learn a new skill. However, I was a bit disappointed with the Bing search. The first three results are links to a particular product to be used when video editing. For example, the first Bing search that came up was an advertisement for VEGAS creative software, a platform used for video editing. As a former film/video student, I had never heard of the VEGAS creative software until after graduating. This means that I was never taught to use this platform in college, even though I took several editing classes. The one platform that I did learn and have expanded my skills in professionally to this day is Adobe Creative Suites and in the case of editing, Adobe Premiere Pro. This showed up as Bing search result #3. I was mostly disappointed that my Bing results, first and foremost, shared products they recommend I purchase before sharing video editing techniques. I suppose Bing did not recognize that I use Adobe Premiere Pro and even have it installed on my computer I used for the search. I am also disappointed that YouTube videos were not listed in the top 10 results. As an editor, I am a visual learner and prefer watching YouTube videos to learn a new technique.

I am not familiar with ASL; however, this is a skill that I would like to learn thus I decided to include this topic in my searches. I assume that most search results would point me in the direction of self-help books or videos when including “learning” in the search. The Google search gave very well-rounded results, including some “sign language 101” websites, some articles on how to sign and two YouTube videos. Again, I am a visual learner and watching a YouTube video of someone teaching ASL would support my learning tremendously. The Bing search, on the other hand, provided a few advertisements at the beginning of the results, as it has been for a majority of my searches. I found the first Bing search to be intriguing. Hear More is a website that offers products and devices for “independent living.” It seems likely that this advertisement would be targeted to someone a bit older than I am currently, so I found this result quite amusing. Again, Bing has provided advertisements initially, then supplied similar search results compared to Google’s search. I was happy to see that Bing’s search provided a YouTube video, i.e., Bing search #9. This video is also shown in the Google search as the 9th search result.

My final topic to search for was travel vlogs. I find this topic to be pretty relevant to activities I admire as I, from time to time, participate in video blogging or vlogging. The Google search results, again, “hit the nail on the head.” As I wasn’t very specific, these are the typical results one would expect when googling “travel vlogger.” Google provided multiple articles and blog posts about travel vloggers that are the recommended ones to watch. The Bing search results for this search were surprisingly helpful. I have not been very impressed with the results thus far, however, these Bing results shared articles and a YouTube playlist. While the YouTube playlist was created by a random YouTube user, it would still be useful when looking for examples of travel vlogs. Based on this search, I would primarily be looking for video examples, so I am disappointed that Google didn’t share any YouTube video results in the top 10. However, many of the blogs and articles listed include video examples. Yet, even though I was impressed by Bing’s results, they still managed to add in some advertisements towards the end of the results. Maybe the more I use Bing as a search engine, the less advertisements will appear. I would be fascinated to find out.
